Okay, first grade friends! I've finally completed the First Grade "Kid Friendly" Common Core Standards Posters. I have had many requests for these and have been working on them for quite some time. I am exited to share them with you!
These 1st grade common core posters are unique due to the fact that the
standards cards are two-sided: one side is the exact standard written and coded
for your records, the other side is the same standard written in "kid-friendly"
language so that your students will be able to understand what it is they will
be learning. (NOTE: I've taken great care in trying to preserve the meaning of
the standard when I changed it into terms that the students can understand. I
kept most verbage the same and used synonyms for more challenging words to help
first graders understand!)
This document includes ALL standards for
Language Arts (reading, writing, language, etc.) and Math.
Also included are subject heading cards for your display,
information explaining how to read the coding on each card, and directions on
how to print and make the cards. Making the cards is very simple-- you just need
to print, cut around the solid black line (but DO NOT cut the line in the
middle) and then fold in half. One side will be the "teacher" side and the other
is the "kid-friendly" side. Just laminate, if you wish, and display in your
classroom to make the learning goals more visible to your students!
Check
them out... Just click on the picture above to be taken to the link! I hope these posters help you with the new transition to the Common Core!

The 7 Habits of Happy Kids
If you haven't heard of the 7 Habits of Happy Kids, you need to read this! Based on Stephen Covey's The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, the 7 Habits of Happy Kids are habits that you can teach your students to help them develop into responsible leaders and learners. The school that I teach at is considered a "Leader in Me Lighthouse School", which means that we implement the 7 Habits of Happy Kids and other leadership tools in our school.
The 7 Habits for Kids include the following:
Habit #1: Be Proactive (You're in Charge)
Habit #2: Begin with the End in Mind (Have a Plan)
Habit #3: Put First Things First (Work First, Then Play)
Habit #4: Think Win-Win (Everyone Can Win)
Habit #5: Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood (Listen Before You Talk)
Habit #6: Synergize (Together is Better)
Habit #7: Sharpen the Saw (Balance Feels Best)
These 7 Habits are great for teaching your students how to be leaders in their own lives. In the classroom, I use the language of the 7 Habits daily. I start the year off introducing one at a time, and spending about a week on each habit. We have discussions, role play, and give examples of students in the classroom who are demonstrating the habits. Once the students really understand each one, I start having the students give compliments to one another based on the habits. Some examples of how students can use these habits include:
Be Proactive- Students take initiative to get their work done instead of you having to remind them. They also choose their moods and attitudes.
Begin with the End in Mind- Students have a plan for different things. Examples include setting goals for themselves and planning ahead when working on a project.
Put First Things First- Students make their classroom work a priority before doing a "quiet choice" or other option. They can also practice this habit at home by doing their homework first before playing.
Think Win-Win- Students work together to make sure that problems are solved with a win-win solution. A Win-Win is a compromise where everyone feels that they've won.
Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood- Students listen to all directions before asking questions, listen to others without interrupting, and try to consider the viewpoints of others. (This is a hard one for my second graders!)
Synergize- Students work together and use their strengths to make the group the best that it can be.
Sharpen the Saw- Students take care of themselves by having fun, execising their mind and body, and spending time with friends and family.
Once students understand the meaning of the habits, then it's time to have them start demonstrating the habits at school and at home. You will really notice a difference in your students and classroom culture when they begin to use these in their own lives! It is so wonderful to see them develop into confident, responsible leaders.
Here is a picture of a tree that I use in my classroom to display the 7 Habits (the tree is part of the book):

This freebie is a set of awards that you can use when you "catch" one of your students demonstrating the 7 Habits. The kids LOVE to get these and the parents also enjoy seeing them come home. Blogger Pet Peeves!
Hi everyone! I'm linking up with Jessica at Mrs. Stanford's Class for this linky...
I have been totally cracking up reading about everyone's blogger pet peeves! I also got a little worried because I'm pretty new to blogging and was sure that I was committing some of these "blogging sins". First off, I am so sorry for having the word verification turned on when commenting on my blog posts. I had no idea! After reading this tutorial from Rachelle at What the Teacher Wants, I figured out how to turn this annoying thing off. No more trying over and over again to spell a nonsense word that you can't even read!
Okay, now that I've apologized, here are two of my blogging pet peeves:
1. Word verifier: No one wants to try and retry spelling a nonsense word just to leave a blog comment. (I'm so glad I learned how to fix this!)
2. Music: Oh my, this one really gets to me. I'm scrolling through blogs, completely relaxed and then all of a sudden... BAM! Music comes blaring through my computer speakers as soon as I click on someone's blog. I know some people may love this, but it drives me nuts! I instantly start looking for an "off" button to click and if I can't find one easily, I usually leave.
So what are some of your blogger pet peeves? Link up and share- I'd love to read them (and make sure I'm not commiting any more of them!)

Polka Dot Classroom Theme and a GIVEAWAY!
I know you all are going to think I'm crazy, but I've already started thinking about a new classroom theme for next year! I've seen some really cute ideas for all types of themes but haven't really found one that is "me". I guess I decided that I'm not a big theme person! Instead of having a classroom theme like pirates, owls, or movie stars, I decided to go with polka dots. My inspiration was the new classroom carpet that my class received this year from Donors Choose. (If you haven't heard of this organization, you need to check it out!!) Here is a picture of the amazing classroom carpet that was donated to my classroom this year:
So going with the idea of polka dots, I created this set for my classroom next year:
I am so excited about it! I'm going to make curtains, chair pockets, and other items to match these colors. Since I'm so excited about this set, I decided to give one away for FREE! This will be my very first giveaway on my blog and I can't wait! All you have to do is enter below. You will get one entry for following my blog, liking my Facebook page, following my TpT store, and/or leaving a comment on this blog post. If you blog about this giveaway on your own blog, you can earn three extra entries! You can have a total of 7 entries. I'll announce the winner
here next Tuesday morning! Good luck =)
